WINTER 2014 MOSAIC COURSES - SATURDAY. FEBRUARY 15TH, 2014

THE MANDALA IN MOSAIC

The word “Mandala” conjures images of saffron robed Buddhist monks. Mandalas have been used in meditation for thousands of years. Found around the world in many variations, the circular symmetrical patterns represent wholeness, all things sees and unseen, positive and negative, material and spiritual, cosmic and microcosmic.

In this workshop we will experiment with creating individual mosaic mandalas based upon the shapes and colours that you are inspired by on the day. We will play around with ways of manipulating shapes within symmetrical patterns and you will be instructed upon how to cut tile and how to work through the mosaic process. No mosaic making experience is necessary. Tools and tiles supplied. A material fee of $20 per participant - paid to the instructor - will cover all materials needed for your mosaic.

WINTER 2014 MOSAIC COURSES - SATURDAY, MARCH 15, 2014

FLIGHTS OF FANCY - BIRDHOUSES IN MOSAIC

Birdhouses just seem to beckon a person into whimsical acts of inventiveness in decoration. Riotous colours and architectural excess. Why not have a purple and orange house? Why not give your broken china a new life as roof shingle? The birds won’t pass judgement. Let your child side delight in adorning a home for your favorite chickadee.

In this 6 hour workshop we will learn how to prepare a surface for mosaic work, how to mix mortar and apply it and how to safely cut and nip tile to create your birdhouse beautiful! Participants are asked to bring a small wooden birdhouse (there are several designs available at Micheals for approx.. $8 each or less). If you have any materials that you would like to use such as broken china, pottery, glassware, shells, buttons etc. please bring them with you. Bringing tiling materials is not necessary though as all tools, supplies and tiles are provided for creating a complete house. A material fee of $20 per participant - paid to the instructor - will cover these materials for your mosaic.

Saturday, October 29, 2011 • Cost: $95

Do you have piles of photos stuffed in an old shoe box or languishing on your computer??? Wouldn’t it be nice to get your favorite into a frame? Frames don’t have to be boring black or silver or mass produced. Come design and decorate your own frame to reflect your love of colours and textures. We will have beautiful glass and ceramic tiles to work with and no mosaic experience is necessary.
In this 6 hour workshop we will learn how to safely cut and nip tile to create a stunning work of framing art! We will talk about how to generate designs and how to lay tile in patterns. Participants are asked to bring any materials they would like to use such as broken china, pottery, glassware, shells, buttons, beads, etc.

“Putting Out The Welcome Mat…well…Welcome Sign”
-Mosaic Greetings For Your Home
Saturday, November 12, 2011 • Cost: $95

Creating a mosaic greeting sign to adorn the entrance of your home is a great way to play with number and letter forms in tile. The finished message may welcome or raise a chuckle. Up to you!
In this 6 hour workshop we will learn how to safely cut and nip tile to create letters and number. I will be teaching a mosaic laying technique called the “Indirect Method”. We will discuss how to generate border pattern designs and how to determine colour choices to make your sign eye-catching. Participants are asked to bring a wooden plaque or board max. 8”x10” (choices available at Micheals). No mosaic experience is necessary.

“Welcome The Season of Light” –Mosaic Candle Platters
Saturday, December 10, 2011 • Cost: $95

As we come near to the darkest time of the year we yearn for the light to return. This mosaic project will be to create a reflective tiled plate that may be used to hold an arrangement of candles. The vitreous glass tiles will glimmer and bounce the wavering flames from surface to surface and maybe we can forget for a while that it is so dark outside.
In this 6 hour workshop we will be working with a silicone adhesive on earthenware plates. You will learn how to safely cut and nip tiles to create patterns and images of your own design. We will discuss how to generate designs and how to determine colour choices and laying patterns to compliment the natural form of the plate. You are asked to bring ideas and images you might like to use as a jumping off point for a design. No mosaic experience is necessary.
Come play!

"CRACKED ART FOR KIDS" MOSAIC WEEK LOTS OF MESSY FUN!

During March Break 2011 I had the chance to spend 5 afternoons working with children ages 5-9 at the Saint John Early Childhood Centre. We explored making mosaics from pebbles and found items by pressing them into a thin layer of sand and pouring plaster of Paris overtop. Then the children moved to working with more traditional glass and ceramic tiles to create two small mosaics on square bases. I'm not sure who learned more - me or them. We definitely got right into it and made daily messes! That is the fun though, isn't it???

You can find some pictures from the course in my "COURSES" section of the website.

UPCOMING MOSAIC COURSE October 30, 2010 start

From Broken Bits To Wow! - Making Mosaic Art with Sheryl Crowley

What is a mosaic anyway? All you have to do is to come stand in the Arts Centre lobby and look down. Beautiful, isn’t it? Mosaic making is about getting to play with gorgeously coloured tiles and letting your imagination flow as you place bits of tile, bead, shell, or even stones and broken china into patterns, creating a unique mosaic for you to take home.

We will explore design, colour, and cutting & laying techniques as it applies to mosaic making as well as the final stage-grouting. If you have any favorite sea shells, bits of broken china or pottery, or maybe a snail shell or lovely pebble then bring them along to use in your piece.

Each participant will go home with a finished mosaic of their own making as well at some information on resources for futue mosaic work.
